Painting a room can be very exciting, and you might have set out a whole new color scheme that you would like and picked furniture out to match the room as well. It can really be very enjoyable too; sometimes you may be on a bit of a budget so you won’t want to fork out on loads of money to hire a decorator to paint a room in your house.

This is because they can be quite expensive and it can also be quite inconvenient for you as well because someone will have to be at home while they decorate and it means you may have to take time off of work. Therefore the Best of Machinery has put together a guide about how you can paint a room yourself.

Things you will Need

Painting a room won’t be a very expensive task to do, it will just take up a little bit of your time, but it will save you a lot of money. Here’s a list of things that you will need:

  • Paint
  • Paint sprayer
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint roller
  • Primer
  • Safety equipment
  • Paint pallet
  • Masking tape

What Paint Should you Purchase?

The answer to this question all depends on what type of room you’re planning to paint. This is because if you want to paint a bathroom ceiling or a kitchen, then you will need a specific kind of paint that is able to withstand the humidity and the moisture from when the room gets hot because of cooking or because of taking a shower. Therefore you need to look for paint that is suitable for these types of rooms.

Another thing you will need to take into consideration is what type of finish you would like the walls to have; for instance, they could have a gloss, semi-gloss, eggshell or even a matte finish on them. Therefore you will need to know this in advance. It’s usually best to try out different colors and types of paint before you decide on the one you want. You can easily do this by testing the paint on a small unnoticeable area on your wall, that way you can see what the color will look like.

What Should you do Before you Start Painting?

There are many steps that you will need to take before you do paint the walls in your room, and these steps all depend on what color the room is all ready. This is because if your walls are already light and you’re hoping to make them a darker color, then you won’t actually have to do too much before you start, as the walls can be quite easily painted over and you shouldn’t be able to see the color they were previously through the new color.

One thing you must do though it put masking tape over the areas that you don’t want to get affected by the paint, for instance, your skirting boards and window seals will need masking tape over them, as you won’t want to accidentally get paint on them. If you have darker walls and you want to go a lighter color, this is when it can become a little bit tricky. This is because you will want to make sure that the original color won’t show through.

Therefore you will need to try your hardest to remove the old color, and you can do this by sanding the wall down to remove it. Once you have done this, you will then need to add a primer to the wall, and you should pick a white primer, as this will make most colors stand out more. You can add the primer to the wall by simply rolling it on with a paint roller. Once you have done this, you will need to let the primer dry completely.

How to Paint a Room?

Painting your room is actually the most straightforward and easy part of the job. One thing you will want to take note of is that it’s actually best to use a paint roller to paint the walls in your room, as this will create much more of even texture. Plus, if you were to use a paintbrush, then you’re more likely to get paint brush lines all over your walls, and it can look quite unattractive.

You should put paint into the paint pallet and then use the paint roller to roll into the paint, once you have done this you can then apply it to the wall. When you’re doing this, it’s best to make sure you don’t coat it on too thick. Otherwise, it will take ages to dry. You should leave the walls between one day and five days to be able to dry completely.

Conclusion

If you decide to paint a room yourself it can work out a lot cheaper for you and you will enjoy it as well as gain a lot more skills. In fact, you may even be able to paint more rooms in the future. There are several steps that you will need to complete before you decide to apply paint to your walls, and if you don’t do these, then it could mean that your walls won’t turn out the exact way that you had planned for them too.

It’s also very important that you wear your safety equipment too because you don’t want to accidentally get paint on your body and if this happens, you may struggle to remove it.
