Band Saws Buyer’s Guide

Types of Band Saw

When purchasing a band saw, the first aspect to consider is whether you want to purchase a table saw or a band saw which comes complete with a table or a stand.  A table top model is lighter, smaller, and can be stored away easily.  However, a floor-standing model may be more suitable for heavier workloads or for professional tradespeople who want a sturdier and more stable power tool.

Additional types of band saw definitions include a fixed band saw, which is positioned on a frame or table, or alternatively, a portable band saw which is held with two handles and is held against the wood freely.  A mobile band saw is compact and will be relatively lightweight in contrast to their fixed band saw counterpart, and in general, provide easy to change blades.

This type of band saw may be effective if working at a height, or when working on awkwardly positioned objects, whereas a fixed band saw is more of a traditional option which allows you to complete work at the table or bench effectively.

Blades

When purchasing a band saw, you should also consider the types of blades to buy and use.  First consider the length of the blade, ensuring that the blade is the correct length for both your band saw and for the material you are cutting.  Secondly, the width of the blade is very important.  You should always use the widest blade possible as a more full blade will feel stronger and will withstand greater pressures.

Your band saw may require certain minimum and maximum width blades, however, so ensure to check the manufacturer’s instructions first.  Thirdly, remember that if you alternate your cuts from straight cuts to curved cuts, the teeth on your blade may become disturbed due to the curvature.  Therefore, aim to keep separate blades for straight cuts and a separate blade for curved cuts.

Teeth Form

A skip tooth blade is the blade which is perfect for rip cutting, which is where your blade cuts with the grain.  Alternatively, a triangular tooth blade is excellent for cross-cutting, which is where your blade cuts across the grain.  A skip tooth is a feature within coarse tooth blades and is available within 3 TPI, 4 TPI, and 6 TPI.  3 TPI is perfect for cutting deep rip cuts and will provide a rough sawn finish.

4 TPI is superb for general-purpose cutting, in particular, cross-cutting, and can allow you to achieve a reasonable finish.  However, 6 TPI is the ideal blade for allowing rip cutting up to 50 mm or cross-cutting of up to 150 mm.  Alternatively, 10 TPI is an excellent blade for slicing MDF or plywood, in addition to some plastics.

Expert Tip

When using your band saw, the heat and friction against the blades will cause the teeth to lose their sharpness and may hinder the precision of your cutting.  To test whether the blades are sharp enough for your project, run your finger against the teeth of the blade.  A sharp blade will ‘hook’ the finger on your skin like a fish hook.

Did you know?

Band saw blade drift’ occurs when you are using your band saw to cut a straight line, yet you feel compelled to turn the material at an angle in order to follow the straight line exactly.  To combat this, clamp a scrap piece of wood along one side of the band saw before cutting your project material; the scrap piece of wood will prevent any drift or pull from the project material and will ensure that a straight cutting line is achieved.
