Floor Jack Buyer’s Guide

Types of Floor Jacks

There are four common types of floor jack you’re likely to encounter when looking to buy a new one. The most common option is the standard floor jack, designed for easy lifting of most vehicle types. These jacks use hydraulic pressure to lift heavier items with ease, featuring a long handle to operate the lifting mechanism. These floor jacks can be heavy and awkward to use, thanks to their large bulk. This makes them an excellent choice for home use but not so ideally suited for transport or use out of the home.

Scissor jacks are a more portable option, relying on the turning of a screw to move diagonal struts together. This raises the top up like a giant pair of scissors. These are highly portable and lightweight. They’re often included with cars by the manufacturers. They are, however, only suitable for use on specific vehicles, as they’re designed to lock into specific points on the underside of a vehicle.

Bottle jacks combine power with a small footprint for easy storage, lifting vertically rather than relying on a diagonal arm. These cylindrical floor jacks raise a lifting arm straight upwards through hydraulic pressure and pumping. They have no wheels for transport, relying instead on a sturdy and stable flat base.

The final type of floor jack is more specialist in nature; Hi-Lift jacks are designed to use on off-road vehicles or anything else with a raised chassis. These tend to have exceptionally high lifting capacities and can raise vehicles up to an impressively high height. They are, however, very large and generally not used for home vehicle maintenance, thanks to their specialist application and large size.

How to Use a Floor Jack

Floor jacks are relatively easy to use, but the dangers are high enough that it’s important to make sure you know how to use one correctly before you attempt to lift a car with one.

First, place your hydraulic floor jack under your vehicle until the lifting saddle is directly underneath the cross member (the metal support beam that runs from the front to the back of your car on each side). Then, push downwards on the floor jack lever until the saddle contacts the cross member.

If it doesn’t look straight, adjust your jack’s position. Then, once you’re happy that everything is oriented correctly, continue pushing on the lever to lift the car upward to your desired height. After that, lock the jack into position and add any other jack stands you can for added safety.

Always ensure that you’ve placed your floor jack on a flat, stable surface before you start to lift. Placing a floor jack on an unstable or uneven surface can cause things to slip, potentially dropping a heavy vehicle on you while you’re working!

How to Bleed a Floor Jack

Sometimes floor jacks can end up with air bubbles in their systems. This prevents them from functioning and gets in the way of your vehicle maintenance. When your floor jack starts to struggle with standard loads, you’re going to need to bleed it. Fortunately, this is a simple process requiring only a single flat head screwdriver.

Open the bleed valve by turning it counterclockwise, and allow the jack to lower fully. Then, remove the oil fill plug and quickly pump the jack up for about 10 to 20 strokes. This runs the oil through the system, allowing the air to escape through the open valves, flushing the system of problems.

Finally, close up all the valves and pump the jack up to its maximum height to check that everything is working correctly. If you’ve still got problems, repeat the process until the last of the air has been removed!

How to Jack up a Sagging Floor

Floor jacks aren’t just useful for lifting cars and other vehicles; you can also use them to fix sagging floors. Using floor jacks to level out a sagging floor is only a temporary solution but it can make a big difference when it comes to raising low points.

It’s important to raise the low points slowly and carefully. Doing things too quickly can cause too much strain on the materials of your floor, causing more damage.

First, place a strong beam on top of your floor jack and set it up under the floor where you’re looking to raise things (usually under the lowest point of the floor). Then, carefully hoist up the jack until the beam touches the underside of the floor. Give the jack another turn or so, but stop when you start to feel some resistance. Lock the jack in place, and leave it for a couple of days to allow the floor to adjust to the movement.

After leaving the floor to rest, you can turn the jack another quarter or half turn, but no more than that. Leave it for another couple of days, and then do the same again. Continue with this pattern of long rests and small lifts until the floor is flat again.

Did you know?

It’s worth using a jack stand as well as a hydraulic floor jack, just for the added stability. The more things you have holding your car up, the more stable and safe it’s going to be!
